Prior to installation, familiarize yourself with the machine’s specifications; power on the press brake, carefully adjust and inspect it, and verify that there is no accumulated dust or metal chips from previous use. This will help prevent unnecessary problems during future operation.
First, verify that the thickness of the press brake fixture and the ratio between the upper and lower dies are within the proper range. Typically, the slide should be precisely positioned at the stroke limit switch. This is a critical step; failure to observe it can compromise the normal operation of the die, yet many operators still make this mistake. Once the slide stroke has been properly adjusted, the next step is to set the upper die limit. Generally, the die is raised to its highest position, at which point the die and the limit switch are aligned. This establishes the remaining travel distance for the die. By performing these adjustments, production efficiency can be significantly improved. During this process, the die must also decelerate, as it needs to slow down when descending to bottom dead center in order to protect both the press and the die.
Next, adjust the gap between the press brake’s upper and lower dies. Begin by measuring the clearance between the upper and lower die sets; the appropriate gap must be determined based on the specific folding requirements of the sheet material. Adjusting the bending angle is also a critical step: the angle selected must align with the product specifications. Generally, for a 90° die set, the intermediate angle should be set larger than the angles at either end; in some cases, the fit may be tight, in which case the machine’s adjustment screws can be used to fine-tune the setting. After adjustment, do not modify the product without first revising the process parameters to meet the original requirements. During bending, use the pressure gauge to accurately measure and set the required pressure, ensuring that the pressure is properly adjusted to prevent collapse or deformation of the die edges.
Turn on the press brake power supply, switch the reversal key to the reverse position, and press the oil pump start button. The press brake’s oil pump will then begin to rotate; at this point, the machine has not yet started operating. For stroke adjustment, when the press brake is officially started, the die-bending operation must be carried out. The press brake’s clamping mechanism must be lowered all the way to the bottom, ensuring that there is sufficient clearance equal to the plate thickness. Otherwise, both the die and the machine may be damaged. Stroke adjustment can be performed either via electric quick adjustment or manual fine adjustment.
When selecting the die slot for a press brake, it is generally recommended to choose a slot width equal to eight times the plate thickness. For example, when bending 4-mm-thick sheet material, a slot width of approximately 32 mm should be used. On the press brake, inspect the consistency and secure mounting of the lower die; verify that the positioning devices meet the machining requirements. Regularly check the alignment between the upper and lower dies, and ensure that the pressure gauge readings comply with the specified limits.
When bending sheet metal, ensure it is firmly clamped to prevent upward deflection that could injure operators. Always disconnect the power supply and stop operation when adjusting the workpiece or pressing the die. When changing the opening of the lower die on a variable-bend brake, no material must come into contact with the lower die. It is prohibited to use the brake’s clamping fixtures to bend extra-thick steel plates, quenched steel plates, alloy steels, square bars, or any other materials that exceed the machine’s performance limits, to avoid damaging the equipment. After shutting down the brake, place a wooden block beneath the lower die on both sides of the hydraulic cylinders, then lower the slide onto the blocks. First exit the control system program, then disconnect the power supply.
